Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly for digestive complaints such as gas and bloating. Herbalists and traditional healers have used tansy as a carminative—an agent believed to relieve flatulence—since at least the Middle Ages. Manuscripts and herbals from these eras recommend tansy infusions or tinctures for various gastrointestinal disturbances, including bloating and colic. The rationale was based on observed effects and the plant’s bitter constituents, which were thought to stimulate digestion and reduce discomfort. In terms of modern scientific evidence, there is little direct research evaluating tansy's efficacy for gas and bloating. Some laboratory studies have identified compounds in tansy, such as thujone and other essential oils, which may have mild antispasmodic or digestive-stimulating effects, but these findings have not been translated into clinical trials or robust human studies. Due to potential toxicity—particularly from thujone—tansy is generally not recommended for routine use today, especially in high doses or over extended periods.
