Evidence supporting the use of: Peppermint
For the health condition: Gas and Bloating
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) is widely used for digestive complaints, including gas and bloating. Scientific evidence supports its efficacy, primarily through studies of enteric-coated peppermint oil. Peppermint oil contains menthol and other compounds that exert antispasmodic effects on the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. This action is believed to help relax the intestines, reducing spasms and the associated symptoms of gas and bloating.
Clinical trials, particularly in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), have demonstrated that peppermint oil can significantly reduce symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and flatulence compared to placebo. A 2014 meta-analysis (J Clin Gastroenterol, 2014) found that peppermint oil was effective in improving global symptoms of IBS, which often include bloating and gas. The most robust evidence comes from studies using enteric-coated capsules, which ensure the oil is delivered to the intestines rather than being released in the stomach, minimizing heartburn or reflux side effects.
While the strongest data pertains to IBS, the underlying mechanism—relaxation of gastrointestinal smooth muscle—supports its use for general gas and bloating as well. However, more research is needed for gas and bloating outside of IBS populations. Overall, peppermint's use for these symptoms is supported by both tradition and modern clinical studies, with a solid scientific basis for its effects.
