Mesquite (Prosopis spp.) has a long history of use among Indigenous peoples in the Americas, particularly in the Southwestern United States and Mexico. Traditionally, various parts of the mesquite tree—especially the pods—have been used as food and for medicinal purposes, including the management of digestive complaints such as gas and bloating. Ethnobotanical records indicate that mesquite pods were ground into flour and sometimes brewed as a tea to help soothe the digestive tract, with anecdotal reports suggesting mild laxative and carminative (gas-relieving) effects. However, these practices are based on traditional knowledge rather than formal scientific research.

To date, there is minimal clinical or laboratory research specifically investigating mesquite's efficacy for gas and bloating. The pods are high in fiber, which can promote bowel regularity, but for some individuals, high-fiber foods can temporarily increase gas production. There are no rigorous studies or clinical trials confirming mesquite's effectiveness in treating these symptoms. Thus, while there is a basis in traditional use, scientific validation is lacking, and current evidence supporting the use of mesquite for gas and bloating is weak.
