Evidence supporting the use of: Gardenia jasminoides
For the health condition: Gas and Bloating
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Gardenia jasminoides, also known as Cape jasmine or "Zhi Zi" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for digestive disturbances, including gas and bloating. In TCM, Gardenia fruit is typically used to "clear heat" and "relieve dampness," and it is sometimes included in formulations aimed at supporting digestive comfort and alleviating discomfort such as abdominal distension and flatulence. However, these uses are primarily based on traditional medical theory rather than modern biomedical mechanisms.
Scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Gardenia jasminoides specifically for gas and bloating is limited. Some pharmacological studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and spasmolytic properties of compounds found in Gardenia, such as geniposide, which could theoretically contribute to digestive comfort. However, these findings are preliminary and have mostly been demonstrated in cell or animal models, not in human clinical trials specifically targeting gas or bloating. As such, the use of Gardenia jasminoides for these symptoms is best characterized as traditional, with only low-level (rating: 2) supporting evidence from modern research. More rigorous clinical studies would be needed to substantiate its efficacy for this indication.
