These traditions have occasionally cited ferns as remedies for digestive complaints such as gas and bloating, often as part of broader herbal mixtures or infusions. The rationale in these systems is typically based on observed effects or humoral theory, rather than modern pharmacological principles. For example, some folk traditions have recommended fern teas or extracts to "settle the stomach" or relieve discomfort after meals.

However, the evidence supporting the use of ferns for gas and bloating is almost entirely anecdotal or derived from ethnobotanical surveys, rather than rigorous scientific studies. There are very few, if any, clinical trials or pharmacological investigations demonstrating efficacy for this specific purpose.
