Diatase (also spelled "diastase") is a collective term for a group of enzymes, primarily amylases, that catalyze the breakdown of starch into maltose and other simple sugars. The rationale for its use in addressing gas and bloating is based on its ability to enhance starch digestion. If undigested starches reach the colon, they can be fermented by gut bacteria, producing gas and leading to bloating. Supplemental diastase is sometimes included in digestive enzyme formulations to aid people with insufficient endogenous amylase production.

There is modest scientific support for the use of amylase (diastase) in reducing symptoms of gas and bloating, particularly in cases of pancreatic insufficiency or other digestive enzyme deficiencies. Clinical studies have shown that multi-enzyme supplements, sometimes including diastase, can help reduce symptoms like bloating and flatulence, but the evidence specific to diastase alone is limited and often confounded by the presence of other enzymes in these formulations. There are no large, high-quality randomized controlled trials focusing exclusively on diastase for gas and bloating in the general population. Most evidence comes from small studies or extrapolation from the known effects of improved carbohydrate digestion.
