Chen pi (dried tangerine peel) is primarily justified for use in treating gas and bloating by traditional evidence, particularly within the framework of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, chen pi is classified as an herb that "regulates Qi" and is thought to harmonize the middle burner (digestive system), reduce dampness, and resolve phlegm. It is commonly prescribed in formulas for digestive complaints, such as bloating, abdominal distention, and poor appetite. The rationale is that chen pi helps to move stagnant Qi in the digestive tract, which is believed to be a root cause of gas and bloating in TCM theory.

Although modern scientific research on chen pi is limited, some studies have identified its active compounds, such as flavonoids (including hesperidin and nobiletin), which may have mild prokinetic and anti-inflammatory effects. A few animal studies and in vitro experiments suggest chen pi extracts might modulate gut motility and reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. However, these findings are preliminary and not robustly confirmed in human clinical trials. The overwhelming majority of evidence for chen pi’s use in gas and bloating comes from centuries of traditional practice, not modern scientific consensus. Thus, while there is some emerging pharmacological interest, the current justification for its use remains primarily traditional, with some supportive but not definitive scientific evidence.
