Evidence supporting the use of: Bacillus (unspecified)
For the health condition: Gas and Bloating
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bacillus species, particularly Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis, are spore-forming probiotic bacteria that have been investigated for their effects on gastrointestinal health, including symptoms of gas and bloating. Several randomized controlled trials and clinical studies have suggested that Bacillus probiotics may help reduce these symptoms, likely through modulation of gut microbiota, enhancement of digestive enzyme activity, and suppression of gas-producing pathogenic bacteria.
For example, a 2017 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Majeed et al., 2016) found that Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856 significantly improved symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Other studies have demonstrated that Bacillus species can reduce flatulence and improve stool consistency in both healthy adults and those with functional GI disorders. The mechanisms proposed include competitive exclusion of gas-producing microbes, production of lactic acid (which lowers gut pH), and enhancement of short-chain fatty acid production, which may benefit gut motility and inflammation.
However, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is moderate and mostly focused on people with underlying functional bowel disorders rather than the general population. While there are positive findings, more large-scale, high-quality studies are needed to fully validate the efficacy of Bacillus species for treating or preventing gas and bloating. Thus, scientific support exists but is not yet robust.
