Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea) has traditionally been used in various cultures as a remedy for digestive discomfort, including gas and bloating. Historical records indicate that indigenous peoples in South America and the Caribbean used arrowroot as a soothing agent for the digestive tract, particularly during episodes of diarrhea, upset stomach, and flatulence. The use of arrowroot for digestive complaints also extended into Western herbal practices in the 19th and early 20th centuries, where it appeared in home remedies for soothing irritated bowels and alleviating symptoms of bloating and gas. The rationale behind its use centers on arrowroot’s demulcent properties—its ability to form a soothing film over mucous membranes, which may help calm intestinal irritation. Arrowroot is also easily digestible and low in fiber, which could make it suitable for sensitive digestive systems. However, despite its long-standing traditional use, there is a lack of robust scientific studies directly evaluating arrowroot’s effectiveness for gas and bloating. The evidence is primarily anecdotal or based on historical texts, with little modern clinical validation.
