Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Angelica (Angelica archangelica) has a long history of traditional use in European and Asian herbal medicine, particularly for digestive complaints such as gas and bloating. Historical texts and ethnobotanical records indicate that angelica root and its preparations were commonly used as carminatives—that is, substances believed to relieve flatulence and promote digestion. It appeared in the European pharmacopeias from the Middle Ages onward and was included in various bitter tonics and liqueurs intended to aid digestion after meals.

The rationale behind this use is largely based on empirical observations and traditional herbal theory, which suggests that the aromatic and bitter compounds in angelica stimulate gastric secretions, thereby improving digestion and reducing intestinal gas. In modern herbalism, angelica is still recommended for these purposes, and it is a component of some over-the-counter digestive herbal blends.

However, while in vitro and animal studies have identified spasmolytic and anti-inflammatory properties in angelica extracts, robust clinical trials in humans specifically targeting gas and bloating are lacking. The evidence supporting its efficacy remains largely historical and anecdotal, with only limited pharmacological data to suggest possible mechanisms of action. As such, its use for gas and bloating is justified by tradition rather than by strong scientific validation.
