Evidence supporting the use of: Cluster Fig
For the health condition: Gall Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cluster Fig (Ficus racemosa), known as "Udumbara" in Ayurveda, has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine in South Asia. Its use for gall stones is primarily based on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation. In Ayurvedic texts, Cluster Fig is cited for its purported benefits in treating disorders related to the liver and digestive tract, which may include conditions like gall stones (cholelithiasis). The bark, fruit, and latex have been used in different preparations aimed at "cleansing" or supporting the liver and biliary system. However, there is a lack of direct clinical or even strong preclinical scientific evidence demonstrating the efficacy of Cluster Fig specifically for dissolving gall stones or preventing their formation. Modern research has explored the plant’s anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically be beneficial for liver and gallbladder health, but no studies have validated its use for gall stones in humans. Thus, its application for this purpose remains rooted in tradition, with only anecdotal or historical accounts supporting its role.
