Evidence supporting the use of: Chanca piedra
For the health condition: Gall Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) has been traditionally used in various cultures, especially in South America and parts of Asia, to support the treatment of kidney stones and gallstones. The plant's name, which translates to "stone breaker," reflects this historical use. Folk medicine practitioners have recommended Chanca Piedra as a remedy to help dissolve stones and ease their passage from the body. However, the majority of evidence supporting its use for gallstones is anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge rather than robust clinical science.
Some laboratory and animal studies have explored Chanca Piedra's effects on kidney stones, showing possible litholytic (stone-dissolving) and antispasmodic properties. However, there is a distinct lack of direct clinical studies or high-quality human trials specifically investigating its efficacy on gallstones. Most of the scientific attention has focused on kidney stones, and the mechanisms by which it might affect gallstones remain largely speculative. The evidence for gallstone support is much weaker than for kidney stones, and authoritative sources like scientific reviews and clinical guidelines do not currently recommend Chanca Piedra as a treatment for gallstones. In summary, while traditional use is well-established, scientific validation for gallstones is limited and further research is needed.
