Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Balsam pear (Momordica charantia), also known as bitter melon, is traditionally used in various cultures for a range of health conditions, especially in Asian and African folk medicine. Its use for gallstones, however, is primarily supported by traditional or anecdotal evidence rather than robust scientific validation. In traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), bitter melon is sometimes suggested for liver and digestive health, which may be loosely extrapolated to include gallbladder support. However, there are no high-quality clinical trials or scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy or safety of balsam pear for the treatment or prevention of gallstones in humans. Most available research on Momordica charantia focuses on its antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. The rationale for its traditional use may stem from its purported effects on bile secretion and liver function, but these effects have not been conclusively linked to gallstone dissolution or prevention. Therefore, while balsam pear may be suggested in certain traditional healing contexts, there is minimal scientific evidence to justify its use specifically for gallstones.
