Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chalcone and its derivatives have been studied for their antifungal properties in vitro and in some preclinical models. Chalcones are naturally occurring compounds found in many plants and are precursors to flavonoids. Several laboratory studies have reported that certain chalcone derivatives can inhibit the growth of various fungal species, including Candida albicans, Aspergillus spp., and Trichophyton spp. The proposed mechanisms include disruption of fungal cell wall synthesis, inhibition of efflux pumps, and interference with mitochondrial function. However, most evidence is limited to cell cultures and animal models, with very few studies progressing to clinical trials in humans. There is no established use of chalcone as a standard antifungal treatment in clinical practice, and dosing, safety, and efficacy in humans remain unclear. In summary, while there is promising preclinical evidence supporting the antifungal potential of chalcone, robust clinical evidence is lacking, and its use for fungal infections is not currently supported by strong scientific consensus.
