Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Borneol is a bicyclic monoterpene commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine and as a component of essential oils. Recent scientific studies have investigated its potential antifungal properties. In vitro experiments have demonstrated that borneol can inhibit the growth of several fungal species, including Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger, by disrupting cell membrane integrity and enhancing the effectiveness of conventional antifungal agents. For example, studies such as "Antifungal Activity of Borneol Against Candida albicans" (Zhou et al., 2016) found that borneol exhibited moderate antifungal activity and could potentiate the effects of fluconazole. Another study ("Synergistic effects of borneol and eugenol against fungal pathogens," Li et al., 2019) reported similar findings.

However, most of the available evidence is limited to laboratory (in vitro) research and animal models. There are no robust clinical trials or comprehensive safety data supporting the use of borneol as a stand-alone antifungal treatment in humans. Furthermore, its efficacy and safety profile in real-world therapeutic contexts remain unproven. Thus, while there is some scientific validation for borneol’s antifungal effects at the experimental level, evidence is preliminary and should be interpreted with caution.
