Sea vegetation, such as seaweed (including species like kelp, nori, and wakame), is used to support or treat free radical damage primarily due to its content of antioxidants. Scientific research has identified various bioactive compounds in sea vegetables, notably polyphenols, carotenoids (such as fucoxanthin), vitamins (especially vitamin C and E), and minerals like selenium and zinc, that can help neutralize free radicals.
Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated the antioxidant activity of extracts from seaweeds. For example, fucoxanthin and phlorotannins, compounds found in brown seaweeds, have shown the ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protect cellular components from oxidative stress. Human studies are less common and generally limited in size and scope, but some small trials have observed improvements in biomarkers of oxidative stress after consumption of seaweed or its extracts.
However, while these findings are promising and suggest a scientific basis for the use of sea vegetation against free radical damage, the direct clinical relevance in humans remains to be robustly established. Most evidence is preclinical or based on surrogate markers. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and some supporting data, large-scale, high-quality human trials are lacking, and the strength of evidence is moderate at best.
