Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) is known to contain significant levels of bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties, such as chlorogenic acids, caffeine, and various polyphenols. Scientific studies have demonstrated that these compounds can neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, which is implicated in cellular damage and aging. Comparative analyses suggest that Robusta coffee often contains higher amounts of certain antioxidants, especially chlorogenic acids, than its counterpart, Arabica coffee.

Multiple in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that both roasted and unroasted Robusta coffee extracts possess strong antioxidant activity. For example, a 2017 review in the journal Antioxidants highlighted the free radical scavenging effects of coffee polyphenols and their potential to support cellular health. However, much of the direct evidence comes from laboratory models rather than large-scale human clinical trials. While regular coffee consumption (including Robusta) has been epidemiologically linked to reduced markers of oxidative damage and lower risk of certain diseases related to oxidative stress, it is difficult to isolate the effects of Robusta specifically, or to attribute the benefits solely to antioxidant activity rather than other lifestyle factors.

In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of Robusta coffee and its constituents for combating free radical damage, largely based on its antioxidant content and laboratory studies. However, further clinical research is needed to fully validate its efficacy in humans.
