Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt (PQQ) is primarily supported by scientific evidence for its use in mitigating free radical damage, although most data are preclinical or derived from animal studies. PQQ is a redox cofactor that participates in cellular energy metabolism and has been shown to possess antioxidant properties. In vitro studies demonstrate that PQQ can scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protect cells from oxidative stress-induced damage. Animal models further support these findings, with research indicating that PQQ supplementation reduces markers of oxidative stress and may enhance mitochondrial function. Some small human studies suggest that PQQ supplementation can decrease levels of oxidative stress biomarkers, such as urinary isoprostanes and plasma malondialdehyde. However, the scope and quality of human clinical trials remain limited, and the long-term effects are not yet fully established. Overall, while there is a growing body of scientific literature suggesting PQQ may be beneficial in supporting the body’s defense against free radical damage, conclusive evidence in humans is still emerging. Thus, its use is justified by initial scientific validation, but stronger and more comprehensive clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety for this application.
