Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Macadamia oil is used to support or treat free radical damage largely due to its antioxidant properties, which have some scientific basis. The oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid and palmitoleic acid, as well as minor components such as tocotrienols and tocopherols (forms of vitamin E). These compounds are known antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals, thereby potentially mitigating oxidative stress and cellular damage. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that macadamia oil can reduce markers of oxidative stress, although direct clinical trials in humans for the explicit treatment or prevention of free radical damage are limited.

A 2010 study published in the "Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry" demonstrated that inclusion of macadamia oil in the diet of rats reduced oxidative stress markers. Additionally, a 2015 review in "Food Research International" highlighted that macadamia oil’s antioxidant constituents could be beneficial for protecting cells from lipid peroxidation. However, the clinical relevance of these findings for human health remains under-explored, and no large-scale human trials have definitively established its efficacy for treating or preventing diseases primarily driven by free radical damage. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence for its antioxidant activity, more robust human research is needed to fully validate its use for this condition.
