Green algae, including species like Chlorella and Spirulina, are used to support or treat free radical damage primarily due to their antioxidant properties. A number of preclinical (cell and animal) studies have indicated that green algae contain bioactive compounds such as chlorophyll, carotenoids, phycocyanin, and various vitamins (notably C and E) that can scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. These compounds have demonstrated antioxidant activity in vitro, and some animal studies show reduced markers of oxidative stress after supplementation with green algae extracts.
However, the evidence in humans is limited. A few small clinical trials have reported that supplementation with green algae (mainly Chlorella or Spirulina) may increase antioxidant enzyme activities (like superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) or decrease markers of oxidative damage. The magnitude and consistency of these effects are uncertain, and most studies are small, short-term, or do not focus on clinical outcomes related to free radical damage.
In summary, there is some scientific rationale and limited early human evidence suggesting that green algae may help counteract free radical damage due to their antioxidant content, but robust clinical data are lacking. Thus, while not based on tradition, the current level of evidence supporting their use for this purpose is modest.
