Ganoderma, commonly known as Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, but its application for combating free radical damage is primarily supported by modern scientific research. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that extracts from Ganoderma contain polysaccharides, triterpenoids, and phenolic compounds that exhibit strong antioxidant properties. These compounds are capable of scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), reducing oxidative stress, and enhancing the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. For example, research published in journals such as Food Chemistry and Phytomedicine demonstrates that Ganoderma extracts can protect cellular components from oxidative damage in laboratory settings.
However, the majority of supportive data comes from preclinical studies, with a limited number of clinical trials investigating the direct effects of Ganoderma on oxidative stress markers in humans. Some small clinical studies suggest improved antioxidant status in people consuming Ganoderma supplements, but these studies are often limited by small sample sizes and methodological weaknesses. Therefore, while there is a plausible scientific basis and encouraging preclinical evidence, high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy in humans. Overall, Ganoderma is scientifically recognized as having antioxidant properties, but the clinical relevance and strength of this effect are still being established.
