Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide found primarily in various species of brown seaweed. Its use for supporting or treating free radical damage is justified by emerging scientific evidence, although most of it is preclinical. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that fucoidan exhibits antioxidant properties, primarily through its ability to scavenge free radicals and upregulate endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase. For example, a 2011 study in Phytotherapy Research found fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus to reduce oxidative stress markers in cell culture models. Animal studies have also reported reduced lipid peroxidation and improved antioxidant status after fucoidan administration.

However, there are few well-conducted clinical trials in humans specifically examining fucoidan's efficacy in reducing free radical damage or associated health outcomes. Most available evidence is limited to laboratory and animal research, which does not always translate directly to human benefit. As such, while fucoidan does have a scientific rationale and experimental support for its antioxidant activity, the strength of evidence for its use in treating or preventing free radical damage in humans is still considered preliminary. Further clinical research is needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety for this purpose.
