Flavoglycosides, a class of compounds consisting of flavonoid molecules bound to sugar moieties, are widely recognized for their antioxidant properties. These substances are prevalent in a variety of medicinal plants and foods, such as Ginkgo biloba (notably ginkgolide glycosides and quercetin glycosides), citrus fruits, and tea. Scientific studies have demonstrated that flavoglycosides can effectively scavenge free radicals, chelate transition metal ions, and modulate antioxidant enzyme activity, thereby reducing oxidative stress and damage to cellular components such as lipids, proteins, and DNA.

Preclinical research—both in vitro and in vivo—indicates that flavoglycosides can decrease markers of oxidative damage and improve cellular resilience to oxidative insults. For instance, research on Ginkgo biloba extracts (which are rich in flavoglycosides) shows reduced lipid peroxidation and increased superoxide dismutase activity in animal models.
