Flavanols are a subclass of flavonoids, commonly found in foods such as cocoa, tea, apples, and berries. Their primary scientific rationale for use in supporting or treating free radical damage is based on their antioxidant properties. Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that flavanols can scavenge free radicals and upregulate endogenous antioxidant defenses, thereby reducing oxidative stress, which is a central factor in free radical damage.
Clinical studies have shown that consumption of flavanol-rich foods, such as dark chocolate and green tea, can improve biomarkers of oxidative stress in humans. For example, cocoa flavanols have been shown to decrease levels of oxidized LDL cholesterol, increase plasma antioxidant capacity, and reduce markers of DNA oxidative damage. While most evidence is derived from studies using mixtures of flavanols as found in natural foods, the beneficial effects are consistently observed across different populations and settings. However, the bulk of clinical evidence supports improvements in surrogate markers rather than direct clinical outcomes related to oxidative damage diseases. Nevertheless, the use of flavanol mixtures for supporting the body’s defense against free radical damage is well supported scientifically.
In summary, the use of flavanol mixtures to support the body in counteracting free radical damage is justified by a strong body of scientific evidence, particularly in relation to their antioxidant activity and ability to modulate oxidative stress in humans.
