Fatty acids, particularly polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as omega-3 and omega-6, have been studied for their potential roles in mitigating free radical damage, a process linked to oxidative stress and various chronic diseases. Scientific evidence suggests that some fatty acids, especially those found in fish oil (EPA and DHA), possess antioxidant properties or modulate the body's own antioxidant defenses. For example, omega-3 fatty acids can upregulate the activity of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, indirectly reducing free radical-induced cellular damage. Additionally, some studies indicate that omega-3 supplementation may help lower markers of oxidative stress in humans and animals.
However, not all fatty acids are beneficial in this context. Some unsaturated fatty acids are themselves susceptible to peroxidation by free radicals, potentially exacerbating oxidative damage if not adequately protected by antioxidants such as vitamin E. Therefore, the protective effects of fatty acids against free radical damage are context-dependent and may require concurrent antioxidant intake.
