Evidence supporting the use of: Embilicanins
For the health condition: Free Radical Damage
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Emblicanin compounds (Emblicanin A and Emblicanin B) are polyphenolic tannins isolated from the fruit Phyllanthus emblica (also known as Amla or Indian gooseberry). The use of Emblicanins to counteract free radical damage is supported by several preclinical and some clinical studies. These compounds act as potent antioxidants, effectively scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibiting lipid peroxidation in cell-based and animal models. Research published in peer-reviewed journals demonstrates that Emblicanins contribute significantly to the overall antioxidant activity of Amla extract. For instance, in vitro studies have shown that Emblicanins can neutralize a variety of free radicals, including superoxide and hydroxyl radicals, reducing oxidative stress markers. Some human studies with Amla extract (which contains Emblicanins as major active constituents) have reported improved antioxidant status and decreased biomarkers of oxidative damage.
However, it is important to note that while the antioxidant effects of Emblicanins are well-documented in laboratory and animal settings, high-quality clinical trials specifically isolating Emblicanins (rather than whole Amla extract) are limited. Most human studies use whole fruit extracts, making it difficult to ascribe the effects solely to Emblicanins. Overall, the evidence supporting the use of Emblicanins for free radical damage is promising but not yet definitive, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
