Chloroplasts themselves are not used directly as dietary supplements or treatments, but their key constituent, chlorophyll, and the antioxidant compounds produced within chloroplasts (such as carotenoids and certain polyphenols) are often cited for their potential to combat free radical damage. Scientific studies have shown that chlorophyll and its derivatives, as well as carotenoids like lutein, beta-carotene, and zeaxanthin (all synthesized in chloroplasts), possess antioxidant properties. These compounds can neutralize free radicals, thus protecting cells from oxidative stress, which is associated with aging and various diseases.

Research in vitro and in animal models supports the antioxidant activity of chlorophyll and carotenoids, with some human studies linking higher dietary intake of chlorophyll-rich foods (leafy greens) to reduced markers of oxidative stress. However, direct clinical evidence for chloroplast extracts or isolated chlorophyll supplementation in treating free radical damage is limited and often confounded by the presence of other antioxidants in whole foods. Thus, while there is scientific justification for the belief that chloroplast-derived compounds can help mitigate free radical damage, the evidence is moderate and primarily based on the known antioxidant effects of their components rather than on clinical trials using "chloroplast" as an isolated supplement.
