Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Chebulinic acid is a polyphenolic compound found predominantly in the fruit of Terminalia chebula (commonly known as Haritaki), which has a longstanding place in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Scientifically, chebulinic acid has garnered interest due to its potent antioxidant properties, which are relevant to the mitigation of free radical damage. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that chebulinic acid can scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibit lipid peroxidation—mechanisms directly linked to protection against oxidative stress and free radical-induced cellular damage.

For example, published research has shown that chebulinic acid, along with related tannins from Terminalia chebula, exhibits significant antioxidant activity in a variety of chemical assays, including DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging tests. Some animal studies have indicated protective effects against oxidative damage in models of liver and kidney injury. However, while these preclinical results are promising, robust clinical trials in humans specifically examining chebulinic acid for the prevention or treatment of free radical damage are lacking as of 2024.

Therefore, the use of chebulinic acid to support or treat free radical damage is justified by scientific evidence primarily at the experimental and preclinical levels. The current evidence base supports a moderate rating (3/5), reflecting significant laboratory support but insufficient direct clinical validation.
