Catechin gallate, a type of polyphenolic compound found in green tea and other plants, has been studied for its antioxidant properties, which are directly related to combating free radical damage. Scientific evidence indicates that catechin gallate can scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protect cellular structures from oxidative stress in vitro and in some animal models. These antioxidant effects are primarily attributed to the compound’s ability to donate hydrogen atoms or electrons to neutralize free radicals, as well as to chelate metal ions that catalyze free radical formation.
Several laboratory studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of catechin gallate and related catechins (such as epigallocatechin gallate, EGCG) in reducing oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA. Additionally, animal studies have shown that supplementation with catechin gallate may enhance endogenous antioxidant enzyme activities, including superoxide dismutase and catalase. However, clinical trials in humans specifically investigating catechin gallate’s effects on free radical damage are limited, and most human studies focus on green tea extracts as a whole rather than isolated catechin gallate.
In summary, while preclinical evidence supports the antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties of catechin gallate, direct evidence from human trials is lacking. Therefore, the scientific support for its use against free radical damage is moderate but not definitive.
