Camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a fruit native to the Amazon rainforest and is renowned for its exceptionally high vitamin C content, which can be up to 30–60 times greater than that of an orange. The scientific interest in camu camu for supporting or treating free radical damage centers around its antioxidant properties. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress, leading to cell damage and contributing to aging and diseases. Antioxidants help neutralize these harmful molecules. Several studies have documented that camu camu contains not only high levels of vitamin C but also other antioxidant compounds such as flavonoids, anthocyanins, and ellagic acid.
Research published in peer-reviewed journals indicates that camu camu juice and extracts can reduce biomarkers of oxidative stress in humans and animal models. For example, a small human trial found that consuming camu camu juice led to a significant reduction in oxidative stress markers compared to a vitamin C supplement alone, suggesting that other phytochemicals in the fruit also contribute to its antioxidant effects. However, the body of scientific evidence is still relatively limited, with most studies being small or preliminary. While results are promising and support the use of camu camu as an antioxidant to combat free radical damage, larger and more rigorous clinical trials are needed.
