Evidence supporting the use of: Blueberry
For the health condition: Free Radical Damage
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Blueberries are widely recognized for their high content of antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, flavonoids, and vitamin C. Scientific studies have demonstrated that these compounds can neutralize free radicals—unstable molecules that can damage cells and contribute to aging and diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Multiple in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that blueberry extracts reduce oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals, decreasing lipid peroxidation, and enhancing endogenous antioxidant enzyme activities (such as superoxide dismutase and catalase).
Clinical trials in humans, though still limited in number, indicate that regular consumption of blueberries can increase antioxidant capacity in the blood and reduce markers of oxidative DNA damage. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Nutrition found that daily blueberry supplementation significantly improved plasma antioxidant status and reduced oxidative DNA damage in healthy adults.
Given the strong body of laboratory and emerging clinical evidence, the use of blueberries to support the body’s defense against free radical damage is scientifically justified. However, while the evidence is robust in terms of biochemical markers, more large-scale and long-term human studies are needed to confirm direct clinical benefits. Overall, the evidence supports a rating of 4 out of 5 for blueberries' use against free radical damage.
