Blackberries (Rubus fruticosus) are scientifically recognized for their high content of polyphenolic compounds, particularly anthocyanins, flavonols, and vitamin C, which exhibit potent antioxidant properties. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, unstable molecules that can cause oxidative damage to cells, proteins, and DNA — a process implicated in aging and various diseases. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that blackberry extracts can scavenge free radicals and reduce markers of oxidative stress. For example, studies published in journals such as Food Chemistry and Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry have shown that blackberry anthocyanins efficiently inhibit lipid peroxidation and protect against DNA damage induced by free radicals. Furthermore, limited human studies suggest that regular consumption of blackberries can enhance plasma antioxidant capacity and reduce oxidative stress markers, though results are not completely consistent across all trials. While the evidence is promising, most of it is preclinical or based on surrogate endpoints in human trials, rather than direct clinical outcomes.
