BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) is a synthetic antioxidant widely used as a preservative in foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals to prevent oxidative rancidity. Its antioxidant properties are the primary basis for its consideration in protecting against free radical damage. In vitro and some animal studies have shown that BHT can neutralize free radicals and inhibit oxidative processes, suggesting a potential to reduce oxidative stress. However, the majority of evidence for BHT’s antioxidant effects comes from these laboratory and animal models rather than robust human clinical trials.

There is limited evidence from human studies to support its use as a dietary supplement specifically to treat or prevent free radical-related diseases. Safety concerns over potential toxicity at higher doses further limit its therapeutic application in humans. Regulatory agencies, including the FDA and EFSA, approve BHT for use as a food additive within certain limits but do not authorize it for medicinal use against free radical damage. Therefore, while the antioxidant mechanism of BHT is scientifically validated in controlled settings, there is insufficient clinical evidence to recommend its use as a supplement or treatment for oxidative stress in people.
