Apricot (Prunus armeniaca) is used in various traditional medicines, but its relevance to free radical damage is primarily supported by scientific evidence. Apricots contain significant amounts of antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene (a precursor to vitamin A), and polyphenolic compounds. These antioxidants are known to neutralize free radicals, thereby reducing oxidative stress and potential cellular damage. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts from apricot fruits, seeds, or kernels can scavenge free radicals and protect against oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA. For example, research published in peer-reviewed journals has shown that apricot kernel extracts can increase the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase in animal models. However, most of the direct evidence comes from laboratory or animal studies rather than large, well-controlled human clinical trials. Thus, while the antioxidant content of apricots provides a plausible scientific rationale for their use against free radical damage, robust clinical data in humans are still limited.
