Evidence supporting the use of: Angelica
For the health condition: Fibroids (uterine)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Angelica (primarily Angelica sinensis, also known as Dong Quai) is traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine to support women's reproductive health, including menstrual disorders and symptoms related to uterine fibroids. Historical texts and traditional practitioners often recommend Angelica as a "blood tonic" and to help regulate menstruation, alleviate dysmenorrhea, and improve overall pelvic blood circulation. However, there is a lack of rigorous scientific studies specifically examining Angelica’s efficacy for the treatment or reduction of uterine fibroids. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on its use as part of multi-herb formulas rather than as a single agent. Systematic reviews of herbal treatments for fibroids often mention Angelica as a component of traditional formulations, but do not isolate its effects. Preclinical studies suggest some potential anti-inflammatory and muscle-relaxant effects, but these have not been directly linked to fibroid shrinkage or symptom relief in human clinical trials. Thus, while Angelica has a strong tradition of use for gynecological concerns, current scientific evidence specifically supporting its use for uterine fibroids is minimal.
