Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin E (typically as tocopheryl acetate) has some scientific basis for its use in supporting aspects of the female reproductive system, although the evidence is not robust. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, protecting cells—including those in the reproductive organs—from oxidative stress. Some studies have investigated its role in female fertility, particularly in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies like in vitro fertilization (IVF). Limited clinical trials suggest that vitamin E supplementation may improve endometrial thickness in women with thin endometrium, potentially supporting implantation. There is also some evidence that vitamin E, often in combination with other antioxidants, may help reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and dysmenorrhea. However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate to low. Most studies are small, use varying doses, or combine vitamin E with other nutrients, making it difficult to attribute effects specifically to vitamin E. Major health organizations do not currently endorse vitamin E supplementation specifically for reproductive health in women unless there is a documented deficiency. Traditional use of vitamin E for female reproductive health is not prominent in herbal or folk medicine records. In summary, while there is some emerging scientific support for vitamin E in certain reproductive contexts, its role is not firmly established, and more high-quality research is needed.
