Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has a scientifically supported role in the female reproductive system, particularly related to its involvement in hormonal regulation and menstrual health. Research indicates that vitamin B6 is helpful in alleviating symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), including mood swings, irritability, and breast tenderness. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown modest but statistically significant reductions in overall PMS symptoms with vitamin B6 supplementation, typically at doses of 50-100 mg per day. The proposed mechanism is that vitamin B6 is a cofactor in neurotransmitter synthesis (such as serotonin and dopamine), which can influence mood and behavior associated with the menstrual cycle.
Vitamin B6 has also been studied for its potential use in addressing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (morning sickness). Clinical guidelines in several countries recommend vitamin B6 as a first-line therapy for mild to moderate nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, based on randomized clinical trial evidence.
However, while there is evidence for these specific uses, vitamin B6 does not have a broad or universal effect on all aspects of female reproductive health. Its main benefits are limited to PMS and pregnancy-related nausea, rather than fertility or other reproductive disorders. Excessive intake can lead to neuropathy, so supplementation should be monitored.
