Evidence supporting the use of: Pubescent Angelica
For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Pubescent Angelica (Angelica pubescens), also known as Duhuo in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal practices. Traditionally, it is used primarily for its effects on the musculoskeletal system—specifically to dispel wind-dampness and alleviate pain in conditions like arthritis and rheumatism. However, some species within the Angelica genus, such as Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai), are widely recognized in TCM for supporting female reproductive health, including menstrual regulation and alleviation of menopausal symptoms. This cultural association may contribute to the perception that Pubescent Angelica supports the female reproductive system as well.
Nevertheless, Pubescent Angelica (Angelica pubescens) itself is not traditionally emphasized as a primary herb for female reproductive health; that role is more accurately attributed to Angelica sinensis. There is limited scientific research specifically investigating Angelica pubescens for female reproductive system support. Most claims are rooted in traditional herbal formulations and use, rather than modern clinical trials or pharmacological studies. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for its use in this context (often due to confusion or overlap with other Angelica species), the direct evidence supporting its benefit to the female reproductive system is weak.
