For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly for supporting the female reproductive system. Folk medicine and herbal texts from the Middle Ages onward have recommended Lady's Mantle for a range of gynecological issues, including regulating menstrual cycles, easing menstrual cramps, and alleviating menopausal symptoms. Its astringent properties, attributed to its tannin content, were thought to help with heavy menstrual bleeding and to "tone" the uterus. Additionally, Lady's Mantle was used topically for wounds and skin care.
However, scientific validation for these traditional uses is limited. Modern clinical trials are scarce, and most of the support comes from anecdotal evidence and historical writings rather than robust, peer-reviewed studies. Laboratory analyses have confirmed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, and salicylic acid derivatives, which may have mild anti-inflammatory and astringent effects. Yet, no high-quality human trials have demonstrated clear efficacy for Lady's Mantle in treating specific female reproductive system conditions. Thus, while the herb remains popular in traditional and herbal practices, its use for female reproductive health is not strongly supported by contemporary science.
