Lactobacillus salivarius is a probiotic species found naturally in the human gastrointestinal and oral tracts and has also been detected in the vaginal microbiota. Its potential role in supporting the female reproductive system, particularly vaginal health, is supported by several scientific studies, though the evidence is not as robust as for some other Lactobacillus species such as L. crispatus or L. reuteri. Research suggests that L. salivarius can help maintain a healthy vaginal environment by producing lactic acid and other antimicrobial compounds, thereby lowering vaginal pH and inhibiting the growth of pathogens that cause bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. Some clinical trials and in vitro studies have demonstrated that supplementation with L. salivarius may contribute to the restoration of normal vaginal flora, especially after antibiotic use or during episodes of dysbiosis. However, while these findings are promising, they are relatively few in number and often involve small sample sizes. Larger, well-controlled human studies are needed to further validate its efficacy.
