For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
The Chinese Pond Turtle (Mauremys reevesii), known as "Gui Ban" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long-standing history of use for supporting the female reproductive system. In TCM, turtle plastron (the underside shell) is a key ingredient in formulas such as Gui Ban Jiao, which is believed to nourish "Yin," replenish the blood, and strengthen kidney essence. These properties are associated with benefits for menstrual health, menopausal symptoms, and overall reproductive vitality in women. Such uses are described in classical texts like the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing and are part of the pharmacopoeia of TCM.
However, scientific evidence for these traditional claims is limited. While some modern studies have investigated the bioactive components of Gui Ban (such as collagen and certain minerals), rigorous clinical trials specifically evaluating its effects on female reproductive health are lacking. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional use, rather than validated by contemporary biomedical research. Therefore, while the use of Chinese Pond Turtle for female reproductive health is well-established in traditional practice, scientific validation remains minimal.
