Evidence supporting the use of: 7-hydroxymatairesinol (HMR)
For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
7-Hydroxymatairesinol (HMR) is a plant-derived lignan found primarily in the Norway spruce (Picea abies). It is metabolized in the human body to enterolactone, a phytoestrogen. The use of HMR to support the female reproductive system is based on its phytoestrogenic activity, as phytoestrogens can interact with estrogen receptors and potentially modulate estrogen-dependent physiological processes. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that HMR and its metabolites can exhibit weak estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects, which may influence menstrual health, menopausal symptoms, or hormone-related conditions. However, the bulk of supportive evidence comes from animal studies and in vitro assays, with limited human clinical trials available. A few small human studies suggest that HMR supplementation increases serum enterolactone levels, but direct evidence for benefits on female reproductive health remains preliminary. Therefore, while there is scientific rationale and some limited evidence supporting the use of HMR for the female reproductive system, robust clinical evidence is lacking, and its efficacy and safety for this purpose are not yet well established.
