Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) have some scientific basis for use in supporting or treating fatty liver disease, particularly nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). MCTs are more rapidly absorbed and oxidized than long-chain triglycerides, which means they are less likely to be stored as fat in the liver. Some animal studies and limited human trials indicate that diets enriched with MCTs may reduce liver fat accumulation and improve markers of liver health. For instance, a few small clinical studies suggest that replacing long-chain fats with MCTs can decrease hepatic fat content and improve insulin sensitivity. Additionally, MCTs appear to promote greater energy expenditure and fat oxidation, which could be beneficial in metabolic conditions associated with fatty liver.

However, the evidence remains preliminary. Most human trials have been small, short-term, or focused on surrogate endpoints rather than direct clinical outcomes. Larger, well-controlled studies are needed to confirm the benefits and safety of MCT supplementation specifically for fatty liver disease. Current guidelines for the management of NAFLD do not specifically recommend MCTs, but some clinicians may consider them as part of an overall dietary strategy. In summary, while there is a scientific rationale and some early evidence, its use is not yet strongly supported or widely adopted in clinical practice.
