Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese Tinospora
For the health condition: Fatty Liver Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese Tinospora (Tinospora sinensis, also known as "Qinghao Teng" in traditional Chinese medicine) has a history of use in Chinese herbal practice, primarily for "clearing heat," detoxification, and supporting liver health. In the context of fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis), the traditional rationale centers on restoring liver function and mitigating "damp-heat" accumulation, which is believed to contribute to liver disorders in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory. However, there is limited direct scientific validation for its effects specifically on fatty liver disease. A small number of preclinical studies (mostly in vitro or animal models) suggest that extracts of Tinospora sinensis may exert hepatoprotective effects, such as reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, but these studies rarely focus on fatty liver specifically and clinical human data is lacking. No high-quality randomized clinical trials have been published to confirm its efficacy for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or related conditions. Therefore, its use for fatty liver is justified primarily by tradition, with weak scientific support (rated 2 out of 5) due to the scarcity of relevant preclinical research and absence of robust human trials.
