Caulerpa okamurae is an edible green seaweed found in the Asia-Pacific region and has been investigated for its potential health benefits, including effects on fatty liver disease (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD). Evidence supporting its use is primarily scientific, stemming from preclinical (animal and cell culture) studies rather than a tradition of medicinal use for liver conditions.
Several studies suggest that extracts from Caulerpa okamurae may have hepatoprotective properties. For example, research published in 2018 and 2020 indicates that bioactive compounds in this seaweed, such as caulerpin and caulerpenyne, can reduce lipid accumulation in liver cells, possibly by modulating lipid metabolism and exerting antioxidant effects. One mouse study showed that supplementation with Caulerpa okamurae extract reduced hepatic fat deposition and improved markers of liver function in animals fed a high-fat diet.
However, these findings are limited to laboratory and animal models; there are currently no published human clinical trials directly assessing the efficacy of Caulerpa okamurae for fatty liver disease. As such, while the scientific evidence is promising, it remains preliminary. No substantial traditional use for fatty liver disease is documented in ethnobotanical or historical records. Further research, especially in humans, is needed before recommending Caulerpa okamurae for this condition.
