Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium bifidum
For the health condition: Fatty Liver Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bifidobacterium bifidum has some scientific evidence supporting its use for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), though the quality and quantity of evidence remain limited. Preclinical studies have shown that B. bifidum can modulate gut microbiota composition, reduce intestinal permeability, and lower systemic inflammation—all factors implicated in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. For example, animal studies have demonstrated that administration of B. bifidum reduces hepatic lipid accumulation and improves liver enzyme profiles, possibly by altering bile acid metabolism and decreasing endotoxin translocation from the gut to the liver.
Human evidence is emerging but still preliminary. A handful of small clinical trials and pilot studies have included B. bifidum—sometimes as part of a multi-strain probiotic supplement—in patients with NAFLD. These studies have reported modest improvements in liver function tests (ALT, AST), hepatic fat content assessed by imaging, and markers of inflammation. However, most studies use combinations of probiotic strains, making it difficult to ascribe effects specifically to B. bifidum. Additionally, sample sizes are often small and study durations short.
Overall, while there is a plausible mechanistic rationale and some early clinical data supporting the use of B. bifidum for fatty liver disease, the current evidence is not robust. Larger, well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to conclusively establish efficacy. For now, its use can be considered as having scientific basis, but with only moderate-quality evidence.
