Red-Rooted Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as Danshen) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Historically, it has been used primarily for cardiovascular and circulatory conditions, as well as to "invigorate blood" and dispel blood stasis. Its use for fatigue is not a primary or direct indication in TCM texts, but it is sometimes included in formulas aimed at improving overall vitality, blood flow, and alleviating symptoms associated with weakness or tiredness due to poor circulation or blood deficiency. The rationale is rooted in TCM theory, where fatigue is often attributed to stagnation or deficiency of blood and qi, and herbs like Red-Rooted Sage are used to address these underlying causes. From a scientific standpoint, there is limited direct evidence supporting the use of Red-Rooted Sage specifically for fatigue. Some studies have explored its effects on cardiovascular health, microcirculation, and antioxidant capacity, which could theoretically contribute to improved energy and reduced fatigue, particularly in individuals with cardiovascular issues. However, robust clinical trials focusing on fatigue as an endpoint are lacking. Therefore, the justification for its use in fatigue is primarily traditional, with only indirect or anecdotal scientific support.
