Flavanols, a subgroup of flavonoids found in foods like cocoa, tea, and some fruits, have been studied for their effects on fatigue, particularly in relation to cognitive performance and exercise-induced tiredness. The scientific evidence supporting their use is emerging but still limited. Some randomized controlled trials have indicated that cocoa flavanol supplementation may help reduce feelings of mental fatigue and improve cognitive function, especially in older adults or those under cognitive stress. For example, a 2015 study published in the journal Appetite found that acute cocoa flavanol intake improved cognitive performance and reduced self-reported mental fatigue in healthy adults. Additionally, certain studies suggest that flavanol-rich foods might enhance blood flow, potentially contributing to improved oxygen delivery and reduced physical fatigue during exercise. However, the magnitude of these effects tends to be modest, and not all studies have reported positive results. The evidence for chronic fatigue conditions or general tiredness is even less robust, with few clinical trials addressing these populations directly. Thus, while there is some scientific basis for the use of flavanols in supporting fatigue, especially mental fatigue, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is moderate at best and further well-designed studies are needed. There is little traditional historical use of flavanols specifically for fatigue, as their identification and isolation are relatively recent developments in nutrition science.
