Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Green coffee extract, derived from unroasted coffee beans, is commonly marketed for its purported effects on fat metabolism and weight loss. The primary active compound in green coffee is chlorogenic acid, which is believed to influence metabolism by reducing the absorption of carbohydrates from the digestive tract, thus potentially lowering blood sugar and insulin spikes. Several small clinical trials have examined the effects of green coffee extract on body weight and fat metabolism. A 2011 meta-analysis published in "Gastroenterology Research and Practice" reviewed three randomized clinical trials and found a modest but statistically significant effect of green coffee extract in reducing body weight. However, the authors noted that the methodological quality of the studies was poor and the sample sizes were small.

Additional research suggests that chlorogenic acid may increase fat oxidation and improve lipid metabolism in animal models, but human data remain limited and inconsistent. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support a cause-effect relationship between green coffee extract and weight or fat reduction in humans. Overall, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence for the use of green coffee in supporting fat metabolism, the quality and quantity of the available research are limited, and further high-quality studies are needed to draw robust conclusions.
