Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Calanus finmarchicus oil is a marine oil derived from a small copepod found in the North Atlantic. Its use in supporting fat metabolism is scientifically investigated but not robustly validated. The oil is rich in wax esters, omega-3 fatty acids (notably EPA and DHA), and astaxanthin. Unlike traditional fish oils, Calanus oil’s fatty acids are mainly in the form of wax esters, which may have a different metabolic profile.

Some clinical studies and preclinical research suggest that Calanus oil may influence fat metabolism and body composition. For example, a 2017 randomized controlled trial (Tjønna et al., 2017, Lipids in Health and Disease) found that overweight and obese women taking Calanus oil for 12 weeks showed a reduction in waist circumference and improvements in markers of fat metabolism compared to placebo. Preclinical studies (e.g., Xie et al., 2019) also suggest that Calanus oil supplementation can modulate gene expression related to lipid metabolism in animal models.

However, these findings are preliminary, and the number of human studies is limited. Larger, longer-term trials are needed to confirm the benefits and clarify the mechanisms. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and early evidence for Calanus oil in supporting fat metabolism, the evidence base is not strong, justifying a modest rating.
